love God, love others, serve the world
Life can be incredibly complicated, so at KUMC we try to keep things simple when it comes to the basics of Christian living:
We try to love God with everything we have, because the God that Jesus Christ revealed to the world loves us more than we can imagine. We believe that putting God as the first priority of our lives makes everything else fall into place as it should.
We try to love others, because we believe that all people are made in the image of God. Because God loves them, we try to love them too. Anyone who is a parent, child, friend, or spouse knows that relationships are sometimes difficult, and loving others can be challenging. Churches haven't always done a good job of loving others. There have been times in history when Christians chose actions in the name of Jesus that were anything but loving. But Jesus told us that the way we would be recognized as his disciples is by our love for one another (John 13:35). So we strive to love others in the way that God loves them, and in the way that God loves us.
We serve the world because that is the way of Jesus. Jesus made it clear to his disciples that he didn't come into the world to be served by others, but to serve (Matthew 20:28). Whether we are helping a neighbor in need, or collecting supplies to be of service across the world, we seek to serve the world in the same way that Jesus Christ did.
